2020 July 31 - Sock Donation

Today I announce my intentions and goal to make and donate a minimum 20 pairs to a local charity. I am currently aiming to donate to the Baaad Anna’s sock donation.

More info on community events as listed on Baaad Anna’s website.

I hope doing so inspires other CSM users to do the same for those in need.

Outside of this I plan to build my stockpile of created socks for gifting purposes in what little free time I have while working full time.

(Intention to donate was also added to the WHAT’S NEW page and my INSTAGRAM.)

I have the following to donate #45, #50, #53, #54, #57, #76, #97, #98, #101, #102, #103, #104, #105, #111, #112, #113, #114, #115, #116, and #117. Each pair as listed above are clickable to their Ravelry project page which shows how I made them/yarn content etc.

EDIT: August 1/20 We dropped off the first 6 pairs (others to come) while retrieving a yarn order today between 11am and 2pm. :)

FINAL EDIT: August 8/20 Tomorrow we drop off the remaining 14 pairs of finished knitted CSM socks! :) Below are images of all socks donated.

2020 July 27 - Video: Hung Hem

IMG_7841.JPG

This video is the step-by-step method of how one works a Hung Hem whether you choose to work flat or in the round.

A Hung Hem on the CSM is basically a segment of regular knitting where at some determined point, the initial first row is brought up and hung on the current active row on the machine.

When we do a Hung Hem the initial row of live stitches are taken care of, and if done completely you should not need to worry about any dropped stitches.

The topmost edge of a hung hem can have a variety of stitches worked to create an interesting edge (or to add split rings for the universal bonnet). A Hung Hem can also be MOCK RIB and even full RIBBING - although the use of the Ribber requires a few extra steps to gain access to where one hangs the stitches. This is a video with sound.

2020 July 26 - Video: How to Kitchener your Sock

IMG_7835.JPG

This video is the step-by-step method of how I close the toes of my Cuff Down Socks.

One can make closing the toe of their sock much easier, if, when the sock is on the machine, we ensure to work at least a single row of knitting before working the toe on a cuff down sock.

I recommend that in the beginning at least, try adding stitch markers after finishing your sock yarn and working two rows of scrap, to the first and last stitches of both the top and the bottom segments (four stitch markers). This prevents those crucial stitches from escaping and being overlooked. I also demonstrate how I remove the scrap from the sock although for this sock I caught the scrap yarn a bit while Kitchenering which caused the removal to be a bit more work than usual.

This is a video with sound. This video is viewable by itself or in with the recent Cuff Down Mock Rib Hung Hem Shortie Sock Video and five page written pattern I released yesterday. Looking for more info? Please see MY YOUTUBE VIDEOS

2020 July 25 - Video: Cuff Down Mock Rib Shortie Sock

Re

Also referred to as Cuff Down Mock Rib Hung Hem Shortie Sock.

After a 90 minute recording and a week of edits (while working full time), I introduce my Cuff Down Mock Rib Hung Hem Shortie Socks - or Cuff Down Mock Rib HH Shortie Socks!

* The INSTRUCTION of this sock is SILENT (but not the Kitchener video after) - please see below why *

Don't like or have a good relationship with your Ribber? NO PROBLEM! These easy to make, speedy form fitted socks offer a new option for a summer sock design. AND - this video is matched with a step by step 5 page free written PDF pattern to make it easier to follow along - please see MY YOUTUBE VIDEOS page.

In recognition of those persons with reduced or limited hearing - the SOCK VIDEO was recorded silent and enhanced with text as needed (it was harder than I thought!). After completing the demo I have added the new HOW TO KITCHENER YOUR SOCK video (from the inside/purl-side) as I do it. The Kitchener video has sound.

GENERAL INFO:

  • For best success, take each step one at a time however work each step clearly knowing where to be for the next part

  • I strongly recommend viewing the written pattern steps.

  • This method is the same regardless to what CSM is used, higher or lower slot count cylinders might need more or less additional needles for the DEEPER HEEL.

  • A Deeper Heel creates more of a cupping effect allowing shorter socks to stay put -In my opinion and testing, adding a PRE-HEEL (segment between cuff and heel on cuff down socks) tends to better fit the heel and therefore stay in place

  • I highly recommend using the Heel Spring throughout

  • In my opinion one can make this sock without Mock Rib, however I feel without Mock Rib the sock doesn’t fit as nicely

  • Scrap sock weight yarn is defined here as any fiber (acrylic or not) which is the same weight/diameter as your sock yarn

  • To manage stitch tension I prefer to use sock weight scrap for just a few rows before/after a sock yarn project, economically I use an inexpensive cotton doily fiber between on machine projects (although its harder to hang the buckle and weights on - adding a hemostat clip helps)

  • The Heel and the Toe are both worked on the side of the machine closest to me (between the 9-6-3 o’clock positions).

  • When hanging a mock ribbed cuff in a hung hem, its easier to ensure all the stitches align by knitting some initial rows of the cuff at the start, otherwise stitches don’t align when hanging and/or can end up being too tight to hang.

  • The No-Wrap Heel and Toe method were used - with slight differences on where to work final Heel row and where to decrease the Toe to.

  • How deep or narrow you choose to work the heel/toe and how close to average heel marks you work during the decrease can be adapted for unique Heel anatomy.

  • This awesome pattern starts and ends the same so additional socks can easily be made without extra setup.

THE BEST THING TO CONSIDER WHEN WORKING ANY SOCK RECIPE IS THAT YOU CAN EASILY PLUG YOUR OWN PREFERRED CUFF, HEEL OR TOE METHODS - IF THAT’S YOUR PREFERENCE

This VIDEO REVIEWS:

  1. The finished sock with detailed view

  2. The open sock toe as it appears once finished and off the machine

  3. Using cotton thread (or any non sock weight scrap) in addition to sock weight scrap yarn

  4. A hung hem cuff

  5. Adding mock rib 1x3 on the cuff

  6. Adding cylinder needles to certain empty mock rib slots

  7. Ensuring the deeper (wider heel) has no mock rib empty slots

  8. Hanging specific neighbor stitches from both sides on each newly added cylinder needle for the heel

  9. Hanging a specific neighbor stitch on one side for each newly added cylinder needle for the last row of the foot - before the toe

  10. Hanging the hem

  11. A Heel/Toe using the No Wrap method

  12. Ensuring the final Heel Left and Right rows are one row less than heel start to reduce heel intersection holes -How to use a vintage Gearhart Hold Down heel tool

  13. How some yarn is more sticky on the machine - requiring stronger babysitting - than others

  14. Why it’s a good idea to stop one row from the end of your foot to first ensure all needles are cylinder needles (then work the last row) so that it’s easier to Kitchener or close the toes later

  15. Two ways to add yarn on the machine - 1 at the yarn source or 2 near the work (I just method 1)

  16. Two ways to fix a unknitted but not dropped cylinder stitch - 1 by lifting lower stitch over top or 2 lifting cylinder spring and managing cylinder needle to manually knit unknitted stitch (creates a more even tension on the stitch)

  17. How I separate the scrap from sock yarn

  18. How I Kitchener from the Purl side(inside)

2020 July 12 - Video: The Auto Knitter CSM

IMG_7352.JPG

After over an hour of filming and a day and a half of edits I offer my most recent labor of love - The Auto Knitter CSM - How to take it apart and put it back together I feel one of the very first things all new CSM users should do as part of essential learning, is to dismantle their machine and gain confidence with the understanding of its components and how they interact. We review this machine tip to tail, offer helpful knowledge nuggets, review oil, alternative related components, optional upgrades and the ribber. Knowledge is power, easily know your machine and take the first step to conquering it.

I was inspired to create this video to help the museum this machine normally lives at. During CoVid and the required distancing, the internet still allows us to be together - apart. :)

2020 April 17 - Museum Canadian Autoknitter

Roedde House Museum - 1415 Barclay Street, Vancouver, BC Canada

IMG_6230.png

Starting this project was delayed due to my battling the grocery store new job emotional exhaustion (prior to CoVid I worked in a dental office). This machine had many layers of thick oily grime. Not anymore. :) Here’s today’s progress on the complete cleanup of the local museum Canadian Autoknitter. Today I put 5 hours into this.

An UPDATE from this evening - I’ve finished it! See the review video

I’ve finished cleaning the Canadian Autoknitter I volunteered to make ready for use. It works great. This machine has a 60/80 and 100 needle slot cylinders with matching 30/40/50 ribber dials. Big future planned for this machine and for the local Museum it will live at. 🙂

2020 Mar 21 - Virtual Knitting Event

Froggers together with Baaad Anna's - VIRTUAL Yarny Meetup - March 21 2020 - 7pm-9pm

Adjustments.jpeg

I have just signed up for this virtual event that will be hosted later tonight via the ZOOM meeting service.

I meant to join another group yesterday but accidently missed it by 90 minutes - thankfully June advised me of this! This “Froggers” group is one that I used to physically attend in the past when I lived near the event location. YAY!

I intend to join with my CSM and work on a pair of socks.

We had 11 participants and it was awesome

Info from the event: WHAT IS HAPPENING AND HOW?

"Zoom" is an online Video Conference service that allows us to meet online. You do not need to sign up for a Zoom account in order to access the meeting. You just need to click the link under the "Join Zoom Meeting" link.

2020 March 14 - Thank you!

I wanted to share some of the awesome feedback I’ve received for sharing my love of all things CSM.

I created this site as a hot spot for anyone seeking more CSM info, the info I myself did not have when I first became aware of CSMS in 2012. While we continue to explore this info and community, I will continue to add to this website. I wish you all only the best - lets learn together something new!

To share the thanks I’ve been blessed with please see this new page https://www.csmlove.com/thankyou

2020 March 13 - Toe Up Ribbed Sock

IMG_6191.JPG

Announcing a future VIDEO I will be making. I leave the full steps for anyone interested to follow in this Ravelry project Socks: #73

I took this pair of socks off the machine, after having done the ribbed cuffs, and then hand knitted the bind off/cast off with knitting needles. One has a wide variety of ways to work the cuff of a toe up sock.

When working a Toe Up sock one is limited when wanting to add the ribber due to clearance needed between the finished hung toe and the ribber itself.

I noticed a wood disk and hook tool in a YouTube Video (“Mittens & Mountains” by the Colorado Cranker) and after determining, while a great idea - the wood disk seemed too thick - so I glued two metal washers and the rest is history. :)

(THANK YOU!!!!)

ONE) One way of accomplishing this is to use the vintage start up, umbrella like item like this.

TWO) Another way is the upgraded Toe Up Tool I was inspired to modernize having seen this as noted on my Instagram Jan 12, 2020. I later asked Dave Lord of Chambord CSM to please make this for me. This image shows the Tip Toe Tool Set.

Note while one can add a weight stem with weight puck on a toe once its knitted, this is not compatible with adding the ribber as there is no space to have both.

2020 Mar 5 - Sock, Block & Size Intro

Introducing the Sock Block & Size!

The minimal upgrade to your Etsy purchased adjustable sock blockers so that NOW they're self stable and size measure confirming. Made a sock and want to confirm it’s the correct size? Adjust the blocker to the foot size and try it on!

IMG_5599.jpg

These wood sock blockers were purchased from the etsy store: WoodenGiftsCreations.

They come in XS, S, M and L sizes.

I personally find the Small and Medium tend to cover all the sizes I seek.

EDIT: October 2021 as I’ve switched completely to the Katrinkles sock blockers I have given these to a friend. :)

THREE SIZES SHOWN AFTER UPGRADE:

SOCK FORM MEASUREMENTS BY POSITION IMAGE: My measurements as noted may vary from yours due to manufacturing so its better that you measure your own for achievable blocker foot lengths - OR JUST USE THE RULE CHARTS ABOVE by placing sock form on ruler to determine size if the applied sock is sitting correctly!

2019 Nov 8 - NZAK Table Upgrade

IMG_0065.jpeg
IMG_0061.jpeg
IMG_8696_Original.jpeg

Nov 2019 first upgrades to this table

Nov 2019 upgrades finished with event photo shared

An UPDATE

Today Oct 23, 2020 I decided to further enhance the three elbow joints near the top of the table. In each elbow is a screw holding the elbow together but with metal on metal if the screw slightly loosens it adds to undesirable table movement.

Extending my travel table to standing height - the “NZAK Multi-Machine stand”

November 2019 I added easy custom horizontal segments to upgrade this table’s usability and today I better secured the elbow joints and installed the three further leg extensions to take the 30” height to a perfect 39” inch. I don’t always use the modified components I made but they’re great when used.

The original table alone weighs slightly over 6lbs and easily dismantles although this option isn’t low cost CAD$420.56 (noted March 2021)+$78.16 - however sometimes one has to invest in the better options. Table supplies are hit and miss so check back regularly - see Hokitika Sock World - New Zealand on the NEW CSM MACHINES page.

This table wobbled a bit when setup as the screws in the three elbows loosened with use but with a little removable lock-tight all is awesome again. This table allows for a minimal pack up and event go - I’ve gone with a backpack and my machine in a box. Easy.

For more table info see my INDEX page under that category.

*Be prepared to buy rubber feet for this table from the hardware store as they are not provided.

2019 Oct 17 - My Legare is going to the Chambord CSM SPA!

Choosing a new paint color for my machine was super hard.

I knew from the few I saw, although I LOVE TEAL - a machine in all one color (as gorgeous as it is) seemed to cry for some kind of combination of colors. I fell in love with three different colors initially and asked about doing using applying certain colors to certain pieces however after much thought and further discussion we decided upon their in stock darker teal and the bright green which I ordered ahead and shipped with my machine due to time constraints. Choices can be found on the prismatic website under SHOP - FINISHES - SOLID TONE - a CSM needs approximately 1-2lbs of powder coat paint.

I chose to reinforce my antique CSM box with a machine attachable shelf. The components which were not shipped were: ribber dials, cylinders, vertical yarn mast, yarn topper/carrier (ordered newer Dave Lord replacements). I attached my machine upside down on the inner shelf I’d added before, secured the crank wheel to the inner wall with a cushioned secured part and then cushion wrapped and packed the bright green unopened powder coat paint and components into the box. I made a custom wood lid and then screwed it closed. Once everything was secure I then wrapped the wood box in two layers of heavy brown kraft paper, added shipping from and to and then was given a ride to Canada Post to ship with out with insurance to Dave Lord in Quebec. The parcel weighed 38.8lbs! I didn’t think to ask how long my machine would be away but was trying to be patient.

Having asked in advance, I was honored in the meantime to be able to have a slightly older Legare on loan to me from Susan Forsyth in Mission, BC. This was an incredible favor and I appreciated not having to do without.

2019 Aug 1 - CSM Cover

IMG_9089.JPG

New project: a csm knitted machine cover.
Worked a minimum 23” of flat knitting on my csm with 96 slot cylinder.

(Any cylinder could be used and panels joined with mattress stitch see SWEATER 1.0 or a different way of joining segments in the project BLANKET 1.0)

The flat knitting was hand sewn onto some recycled fabric to give it durability and to make the project less easy to snag on needles)

(I used an extra fabric pouch from a gadget called the “scrap-ma-Bob” bag. See “table organization” on SUPPLIES I LIKE)

The top flat round part was constructed using a plastic plate as a foundation so that the inside had extra durability and snag resistance. The finished result: INTRO VIDEO
